Toffler Scholar Program
The mission of Florida State University College of Medicine is to develop exemplary physicians who practice patient-centered health care, discover and advance knowledge, and are responsive to community needs, especially through service to elder, rural, minority, and underserved populations.
The Toffler Scholar Program provides crucial early-stage funding and network support for Florida State University College of Medicine students. Students earn the Toffler Scholar award through research excellence and innovative thinking.

Stephen Beesley
Stephen Beesley earned the Toffler Scholar Award in 2021 at Florida State University College of Medicine. Currently, he holds a research faculty position at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he is researching frontal lobe epileptic seizures. His current research focuses on understanding how astrocyte cells change in the early stages of epilepsy.
Dr. Douglas Storace
Dr. Storace earned the Toffler Scholar Award in 2022 at Florida State University. He serves as a faculty member in the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University. There, he and his team pursue key questions of how humans perceive using the mouse olfactory bulb as a model system.
Jie Chen
Jie Chen earned the Toffler Scholar Award in 2023 at Florida State University. An assistant professor at the Florida State University College of Nursing, Dr. Chen’s research projects focus on pain and symptom management in older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC), i.e., cancer and cardiovascular disease.
