Celebrating Dr. Vijaya Kolachalama: Leader in Brain Health Innovation and aKTCT Scholar

At the Karen Toffler Charitable Trust, we take pride in supporting scholars whose work transforms human health. Today, we celebrate Dr. Vijaya B. Kolachalama, a KTCT 2021 Scholar whose recent accomplishments reflect scientific excellence and meaningful progress in neurology and aging research.
Dr. Kolachalama, Associate Professor of Medicine and Computer Science at Boston University, is a leader at the intersection of artificial intelligence, clinical translation, and health equity. His work advances how computation can address some of medicine’s most complex challenges.
Advancing AI in Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials
Dr. Kolachalama recently received competitive funding from the USC Initiative on AI for Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials to test AI-driven tools designed to accelerate recruitment and enhance participant diversity. Improving enrollment remains one of the most significant barriers in Alzheimer’s research. By developing AI systems that integrate into real-world clinical workflows, his team aims to make trials more efficient and inclusive. This effort aligns closely with KTCT’s mission to support research that delivers practical impact for patients and communities.
Recognized by the StartUp Health Alzheimer’s Moonshot Community
We are also proud to share that Cognimark, a company founded by Dr. Kolachalama, was selected to join the StartUp Health Alzheimer’s Moonshot Community. Chosen from more than 100 applicants, this global initiative brings together innovators working on early detection, diagnosis, care, and treatment solutions for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Cognimark leverages AI-powered tools to stratify dementia risk and accelerate clinical trial recruitment. By integrating electronic health records, imaging, and advanced modeling, the platform delivers insights designed to mirror expert neurologists’ reasoning. This selection places Dr. Kolachalama and his team among a distinguished group of companies advancing new tools in brain health
Why This Matters
Dr. Kolachalama’s leadership reflects the interdisciplinary, human-centered innovation that KTCT seeks to support. His contributions span AI methods for early dementia detection, technologies that improve clinical trial recruitment, and partnerships that connect academic research with entrepreneurial ecosystems.
These achievements demonstrate how translational science can move from concept to implementation. They show how early philanthropic support can help catalyze ideas at pivotal moments.
We celebrate Dr. Kolachalama’s recent milestones with great pride. His work strengthens the bridge between artificial intelligence and patient-centered care, advancing both scientific understanding and practical solutions in brain health.
Congratulations, Vijaya. We look forward to your continued success and to the impact your work will have on the future of clinical science and those it serves.
